Nikon have excelled themselves yet again with this lens.  The older 85mm f/1.4 D has a legendary reputation as a quality portrait lens. Users have waited a long while for Nikon to update the lens to this newer AF-S design, but the lens delivers the goods.  It's very sharp - a little bit sharper than the older version in the centre, and noticeably better towards the corners - and the focus is very fast and very accurate, even in virtual darkness.  The quality of the bokeh (background blur) doesn't disappoint either: it's beautiful.

In short, this is probably the best portrait lens available for Nikon users right now, full stop.
