Amazingly, this is the first autofocus 35mm f/1.4 lens Nikon have ever made. Prior to this, their previous 35mm f/1.4 was a manual focus design which they'd been selling since 1981, and generally speaking it's not unfair to accuse them of having neglected their ultra-fast wide angle designs. But with the introduction of the excellent AF-S 24mm f/1.4 in 2010 and now this, they seem to be really getting into gear.
So was the wait worth it? Yes. This lens is superbly sharp, as you'd expect, and it's pretty well built. The lens does suffer from some pretty serious light fall-off into the corners of the (FX) frame when it's wide open, and some reviewers have commented that at f/1.4 the bokeh (out of focus background blur) isn't the prettiest around; but these are relatively minor quibbles. 35mm is a hugely useful focal length and this lens is an important addition to the Nikon shooter's arsenal.
