Nikon's previous mid-range zoom, the AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8 D IF-ED, was universally regarded as an outstanding lens. But they've surpassed themselves with this one, introduced in late 2007 at the same time as the D3 camera, which looks to be its eventual replacement.

This lens delivers absolutely state-of-the-art optical performance on any dimension you care to measure. It's big and heavy, but it sits nicely in your hand and it handles well. Some reviewers consider this to be the new reference for mid-range zooms.
