Nikon has made 24-120mm zooms for a number of years, but they haven't been particularly well regarded. The previous one was described by one well-known commentator as "one of Nikon's 10 worst lenses of all time".
But this one is different. Perhaps taking a lead from Canon, whose 24-105mm "L" series lens is very popular, Nikon have significantly upgraded the specification. The gold ring around the barrel is a clue, as is the price: this is a great lens, very well-built with very good optics. (As indeed are pretty much all of the new lenses Nikon have introduced recently.) Sharpness, contrast and colour rendition are ecellent. It does suffer from some vignetting and distortion, but these days that's easy to correct in your image processing software.
This would be the perfect all-day walk-around zoom on an FX camera.
