Don't be fooled by the action shots you see deceptively portrayed in Nikon's promotional pieces. This lens doesn't have fast enough autofocus for sports, but it is great for handheld architecture, landscapes, animals and still lifes. It is very suitable for wildlife photography - it has the length you need at 400mm, but the zoom makes it flexible.
As you'd expect it's very sharp - some reviewers have detected a reduction in sharpness and contrast beyond 300mm, but it's still more than serviceable. The VR gives you up to 3 stops of compensation for camera shake, so with reasonable technique you may be able to shoot with shutter speeds of around 1/50th instead of 1/400th.
COMPATIBILITY NOTE: This is not an AF-S lens. It will not autofocus on the D40, D40x and D60 cameras.
