This lens has almost nothing in common with the 85mm f1/2 L, other than having the same focal length and being very fast and very sharp. It's smaller, much lighter, much much cheaper, and very fast to autofocus. For that reason many people prefer this one for indoor sports, though it's also a good portrait lens.
